Holy shit

I just got back from walking the Pooper. I tend to do this once or twice a day on most days of the week. It helps me get some exercise and also calm his fucking ass down. Anyways, on the last leg of my route, a lady in an Expedition pulls over and says "Ma'am?" I stop and see what she wants because (a) it's a chick and (b) I live in a decent hood where I don't have to fear strangers.

Or so I thought.

Apparently one of the workers on some widow's house decided to rape her. Her physical injuries were extensive enough to require surgery. You know, because losing her husband this past year was not bad enough. To add insult to injury, she was on meds due to either anxiety or depression from the husband's death, so whether or not the man will be ID'd or caught is not a definite.

So what does that mean for our walks? I guess I don't go after dark now. Nice.

I love walking when it's dusk/dark because it's quiet but people are still up. I get some peace and quiet and boost up the ole heart rate. I really hope this is a rumor but I fear it's not.

Say a prayer for this poor victim. I know I will.

Will the pooper attack if someone tries to well, attack you?

You should probably get a can of mace or a stun gun. Don't stop your walks - it lets those bastards win. Just get you some protection, girl. Or walk with a friend.

Also, I highly recommend taking a self-defense or karate class. I'm not near as scared as I used to be when I go places.

It took me a minute to figure this out. Then it occured to me that she was stopping to tell you about it to warn you. Duh.

I'm like you, I wouldn't be walking after dark. That would freak me out.

a couple years ago, a young woman went jogging around 6am in a nice suburban neighborhood - a van with 3 men inside pulled along side her from behind, opened the van door and pulled her right in, speeding off. They took her to a grade school baseball field and they all took turns raping her, leaving her there for the school kids to find... I don't go walking in the AM either. This summer, I plan to buy a taser gun so I can resume my AM walking.

I’ve added the widow to my prayer list. As for walking or living in “safe” neighborhoods, I fear that there are none.

I think your still safe. Walking with a golden at your side, I don't think anyone would take the chance on him being the protective type. I doubt he would ever hurt a flea...but THEY don't know that.

First, I have been a lurker for a while...love your blog!
Second, what the hell. As if there aren't enough problems in this world? Why why why? I don't understand what the "joy" is in having forced sex with a stranger/not so stranger is?! Give me a f-ing break. What is this world? Sometimes I fear for my son growing up...sometimes I fear that is why I enrolled him in karate (and he just turned 5!!). YIKES>
Mace is a good answer. Just be ultra alert of your surroundings. She wasn't out for a walk was she. I doubt the pooper would allow anyone to touch you! Tough tough call.

Goddamnit! It's bad enough that just about EVERYBODY down there has no choice but to let strangers come through day in and day out to get the restoration done from going through the biggest disaster I can remember - everybody's lost SOMEONE, and the fuckers take advantage like that?? I can't even believe it.
